Does Dodgeball Have an International Competition?

Dodgeball is one of those games most people remember from school. A gym class, a rubber ball, and somebody who threw it a lot harder than they needed to. Some people never find out that it has its own world championship, with teams from dozens of countries taking part. It doesn’t get the attention football or basketball does, but there is a competitive side to it that has been growing for some years.

What dodgeball is

Dodgeball is played between two teams, each on its own half of a court. The aim is to hit players on the other team with a ball. A player who is hit is usually out, and a game is won by the team that still has players left when the other team has none.

Matches are normally decided over several games. Professional matches are played on a court 60 feet long and 30 feet wide, with several balls lined up on the center line at the start. Dodgeball is a long way from the sports that fill the menus of US sports betting, but the idea is simple enough that most people can follow a match without any help.

How dodgeball developed

Nobody is sure where dodgeball started. Some accounts trace it back more than 200 years to games in Africa, but there is no solid record behind that, so it is better treated as a story than a fact. What is clearer is that it spread through schools, where it became a gym class staple in the US and in other countries. It drew criticism there too, and in 2006 a national physical education group released an official position on the game.

The 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story gave it another push, and the National Dodgeball League formed the same year. In 2017, GAISF officially recognized dodgeball as a sport.

Where it’s most popular

The US is still the best-known home of dodgeball because of the school tradition. Canada, the UK, and Australia have played it in schools and leagues for years. In Asia, it has grown in places such as Malaysia and India, where traditional games with a similar idea gave it a base.

The World Dodgeball Federation has around 70 national federations. Its championships have been hosted everywhere from Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong to Las Vegas, Toronto and Edmonton. For anyone looking for online entertainment ideas, tournament streams and clips are an easy way to watch the matches, and the federation has a broadcast partnership with Atmosphere TV.

World championships

The main event is the WDBF World Championships, which have been held since 2012. Foam balls were the only type used at first, and since 2022 there has been a cloth ball category, too. The 2024 edition in Graz, Austria, was the largest so far. It had about 1,400 athletes and officials from 36 countries across six continents.

The 11th edition is set for Bangkok from December 5 to 13, 2026, with six divisions and attendance expected to pass the 2024 numbers. The federation has also released an updated set of international rules, built with input from athletes and referees.

Other tournaments

Outside the world championships, the sport runs mostly on national leagues. The National Dodgeball League was formed in the US in 2004 and is listed as the only professional dodgeball league in the country.

The Elite Dodgeball National Championship is also held each year at Boston University. The UK has had a Premier League since 2010, with a women’s version added in 2013. India has held national championships, including a second senior event in 2023, and a Dodgeball Premier League tournament has been played there as well.

Dodgeball betting in the US

Dodgeball is not a regular on US sportsbooks. Betting is legal in most states, but each state has its own rules, and regulators decide what licensed books can offer. The major apps focus on leagues like the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, and no dodgeball markets appear to be listed at the big state-licensed sportsbooks. If you are searching for them, you’ll likely land on offshore sites, which are not regulated in the US and are best avoided.

The rise of esports shows how a newer competition can build a following online first, and betting markets usually follow it once audiences, official data, and a regular schedule are in place. Dodgeball is not there yet. Betting in the US is for adults 21 and older, where it is legal.
